As long as you have turned on the find my iPhone feature in settings this will work if your iPhone should ever go missing. The only reason to have the app installed is to help someone track their iPhone should it be lost or stolen. The phone should let you update it without iTunes since you are on wifi. It may restart after the update. If you don't have iCloud set up, it may ask you to do that; I would do that so that your phone will back up to the cloud.
