I have a Gmail account and use it in the regular E-mail app. I get notifications when the mail comes in. Why would I want the Gmail app over this? With the screen readers, this might come out as sarcastic which is not my intention. There have been a few alternatives that I've used in the past, such as the Ultimate Notifier app - which checks mail every thirty seconds - and setting up a Google Exchange account in Mail - which has a few bugs.
