When the 4S was released, Apple started to sell the 4 in the 8gig version rather than the 16 and 32 gig versions that were previously available. This seems to be the way they do it. When the, iPhone 4 was new, they released it as 16 and 32 and kept selling the 3GS in an 8Gig. Presumably when the iPhone 5 comes out apple will keep selling an iPhone 4S but in an 8Gig version. It is a neat way of making an entry level device.
