Hi Chris Yes the back light is still running. However it is at it's minimum setting. If you turn your screen brightness to zero and have the auto brightness turned off, you will notice that the back light is also still running. At no time does apple allow the back light to be completely off. If you want to play around a bit more with this, go into settings accessibility and turn on white on black. Now when you turn on your screen curtain the screen will go white instead of black. The whiteness is very dull though. In older versions of IOS you could do this and the screen brightness would be very high or at least it would be at the same brightness as it was with the screen curtain off. You could manually adjust the brightness and watch the white screen get brighter and duller with the adjustment. Now it is still white but as I said dull, and adjusting the brightness manually does not adjust the appearance of the screen .At least not until you turn off the screen curtain.
In short the screen curtain now puts your brightness to the minimum and there's no need to muck around with brightness and auto brightness, these can be left at normal settings for sighted people and you can get your battery savings by just toggling on the screen curtain.
