I agree with you that this is  ultimately simpler and should have said that.
I was suggesting flicking left and right for someone who may have never used
this feature before as a way to get a sense of what's there.

I think it's much simpler just to go to the app switcher, double tap and
hold the first item you find and from then on you can just double tap each
app to delete it from the switcher and you'll move onto the next one.  No
flicking right.  It's easy enough to find the Dismiss App Switcher when
you're told there are no more apps.
