Karen, Basically, what you are likely doing is plugging in a cable that the device sees as a head phone and thus it turns off the speaker. Sounds like you need to get a Y cable that has the end that goes into the phone and splits into 2 cables one of which is the one you plug your microphone in to and the other is for headphones. You will thus need a headphone to monitor your recording and VoiceOver because the plug that goes into the device negates the speaker.
