But it didn't ask me questions about permission to use things. I was
expecting that and that didn't happen.

Don’t give up on it. It’s a great app. If worse comes to worse, just
delete it from your phone and download it again. Pay attention to the
first time you run it and make sure not to miss the original questions
about you allowing it to use things. I have used it on a 4S and a 5S
and its great on both. The only difference I found is that the 4S
takes about 5 seconds before it reads you the text and the 5S takes
about 2 seconds.
