I'll also mention that this does not occur when I am using an Apple
Bluetooth keyboard. Only the onscreen home key behaves in this manner.

I have the same thing happening, but it is never more than a couple seconds.
I'm guessing this may improve or go away when I get my iPhone 6. I am
currently using the 5.

I have noticed a problem similar. When pressing the home button twice, to
get into the app switcher, it responds at times, but not always. I might be
taken to the home screen, or there may be no response at all. This is on an
iPhone 5 using the latest firmware.
