If the book is playing, you can open the control panel and find out the elapsed time from there. You may also be able to find out through the lock screen. in both cases, VoiceOver has told me the elapsed time and the total time, such as 3 hours 15 minutes out of 7 hours 32 minutes. Interestingly enough, my wife has told me that what she sees on the screen is the elapsed time and the time left, rather than the elapsed time and total time.
