Although I didn't experience the battery charging backwards problem, I did
start getting flaky results when charging my iPhone 5 both when it was
connected to my computer and to an AC wall outlet. I took it to the Apple
Store and they cleaned out the lightning connector plug on the iPhone using
a soft brush like a soft toothbrush. I don't know if they also used
compressed air or not because they took it in a back room to clean out the
connector. They said it contained a lot of lint and I never had another
problem after they cleaned it.

Hi, My son had a similar problem. He took a toothpick and cleaned out the
charging port, the part on the phone where the cable plugs into. It held a
nice batch of pocket lint. Now the phone charges fast. No promises, but an
easy one to check.
