Sorry, must have missed the question. I have sent many contacts like this with no issues. The contact should just show up as a attachment on the email. Tapping on the attachment will import the contact into contacts. I have only had experience with this on iOS devices. I would assume that the attachments could be read by other OS's / mail clients however this is only an assumption.
