Usually you unlock via iTunes and iTunes should display a message that it is now unlocked. If you didn't see it the only other way is to ask a friend who has an iPhone 5S or later (only those have the Nano SIM) and who is with a different carrier to put his SIM into your phone. If you can make a call it's unlocked. OK, so I am not totally sure but I think actually the switch to Nano SIM was with the iPhone 5 already and not just the 5S.
