Do you use two-factor authentication on Gmail, and thus an app-specific password for iOS Mail? If so, that might be why. In fact, my Mac kept doing that, and that was one reason I finally gave in and went to iCloud Mail, a decision I haven't once regretted.
I think iOS9 includes support for two-factor authentication for Gmail and a few other services, but I might be wrong.
