Anna,

Thanks much for this clarification.

It sounds like when I finally move to iTunes 12.x and iOS 9.x, I just need
to take care that any apps downloaded straight to my iPhone get transferred
to my computer. I admit that I'm still a bit confused how I'll get these
apps into my computer if ticking the Transfer Purchases option in iTunes no
longer guarantees they get copied to the computer. If this no longer works,
how are apps directly transferred to your iPhone uploaded to the computer?
Does a sync accomplish this because I don't think it did in the past?

Alan

Hi alan,

You can still download apps from the app store into iTunes, and I'm pretty
sure that if you restore from an iTunes backup, you'll get whatever version
of the app you have in iTunes. I had about 45 apps that for some reason were
not in the Mobile Apps folder on my computer, and when I tried to restore my
new phone from an iTunes backup, I couldn't get those apps. So clearly
iTunes was looking to its own library to restore the apps, rather than
downloading them from the Internet.

I think that what has changed is that you can't count on Transfer Purchases
to automatically copy whatever apps you have on your phone to your computer.
With the app that wasn't in the app store, I deleted the shortcut to it that
was in my iTunes library, connected my old phone, and chose Transfer
Purchases. The app wasn't copied to my phone. I also tried backing up that
phone, and the app still wasn't copied. So if you have an app in your
library, it should be copied to your phone when you restore from an iTunes
backup. But if the app isn't on your computer, the only way to get it there
is to download it from the iTunes store.

Best,

Anna

Anna,

I haven't read all of this thread but I think I've read enough to get the
gist.

I'm concerned because what I've gathered is that users will no longer be
able to manage backups of their apps on their local computers. Am I
interpreting this thread correctly about that? Does this also mean that
fetching an app using iTunes on ones' computer instead of grabbing it with
your iDevice will no longer be possible?

My major concern is that not everyone chooses to use the latest and often
not the greatest version of an app. For example, I use Audible version 2.4.2
versus the current version 2.6.x and I'm still using Fleksy VO which is no
longer available in the Apps Store. If my iPhone croaks or if I choose to
upgrade it, what versions of my apps that I've backed up using iTunes will
be restored to my replacement iPhone should I do an iTunes restore if I'm
not able to save my apps locally?

Is Apple going to force everyone to be on the latest version of an app
should a restore be required? I'm not confident they are going to track the
specific app versions everyone is running and make those various versions
available for download from the cloud. This would certainly be possible but
I'm doubtful that model will be pursued. It is much less costly for them to
try an force the current versions on everyone.

I hope I've missed something and what I've outlined above will not be the
practice going forward but I welcome clarification and further comments on
this issue.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Ari,

That's certainly been my experience, and that's also what Apple tech support
said. Annoying, and I'd like to be proven wrong, but all the evidence I've
encountered recently suggests that it's true.

Apps not being backed up when you do a back up makes sense, but not when you
do a transfer purchases. Are you sure? That's such a core functionality of
iTunes, that it would surprise me if it was removed.

Thanks,

Ari

Hi Ari,

Apparently in iOS 9, apps aren't backed up to the computer when you do an
iTunes backup or transfer purchases. The iMazing tech support guy gave me
the following link, which makes for interesting reading on the subject:

That seems really weird. I would completely restart the computer and iPhone,
and then try again, just in case.

Hello Ari,

that's exactly what I thought when I started this process, but it turned out
not to be the case. According to the tech support guy at Apple, an iTunes
backup is exactly like an iCloud backup, in that only the data is backed up,
not the apps. As near as I can tell, if you choose transfer Purchases, which
I always do before backing up, any new apps on your phone are copied to your
computer. Older apps are not copied, however. This is true even if the app
isn't in your iTunes library.

The app I was having trouble with was in my library at some point, but
somehow it got deleted from the Mobile Apps folder on my computer. When I
realized this, I deleted the entry for the app from my iTunes library and
synced my old phone with my computer, fully expecting the app to be copied
from my phone to my computer. It wasn't, and the tech support guy said that
was to be expected. Frustrating, but apparently that's the way it is.

Anna

Are both the phones using the same Apple ID? If so, you should be able to
sync the old phone to iTunes, and then transfer the app to the new phone.

Hi,

I tried to use the Mac version of this app. I had an app on my old iPhone
that is no longer in the app store and isn't on my computer, and I was
hoping to be able to use iMazing to copy it from the old phone to my
computer and then transfer it to my new phone. I was unable to do it, but I
got a response within about 12 hours from someone who tried to help. I
responded, and he responded back within just a few hours. It turns out that
due to an Apple policy, I can't get the app onto my new phone, but at least
their tech support was fast and responsive. I will probably uninstall the
app because I don't think it will do more for me than iTunes can, but I
wanted to let people know the company does seem to be improving their tech
support.

OK, my last comment on this application. I found a review on cNet from a
user from July of this year.

 | Version: iMazing 1.2.1

Pros

i could find nothing about the software that was a positive. i removed it
and bought another solution

Cons

After i loaded the product I could not get the files to transfer. I
contacted the help desk on 5 different because they would suggest something
that didn't work After my 3rd email I asked for a phone number,so I could
talk with a human to solve the problem. They did not provide me with a
number. They told me in an email they had an update, they were releasing the
next day that would resolve the issue. It did not resolve the issue. The
help desk was extremely slow in responding. Since I was getting a solution I
decided to post to their Facebook page. They responded then, they did refund
the cost of the software. They told me they took my comment down because it
wasn't accurate.

Summary

The product didn't work and they didn't support the product to make it work.
Their support was weak at best. My feedback this is not a solution keep
looking.Their service and product are pathetic

I am going to try to contact the reviewer and find out what the other
solution was they bought.

Richard
