I did a bit more investigating ... I called Verizon and the tech
support person told me they no longer will unlock/activate any iPhone
older than an iPhone 6. That totally surprised me. It seems like such
a rip-off and designed to force people into buying new phones. But at
least I know the person from Sprint probably wasn't making stuff up.
