HI Patti, How you have output set depends on what you want to see on your braille display. It has no effect on what you type or how what you type is translated. And whether auto-translation is on or not is irrelevant if you're using uncontracted 8-dot braille because there is no translation when you use that setting. The only thing auto-translation does is, if you type some text and haven't pressed Space or Enter, if it's on, the text will be translated after a couple of seconds. If it's off, the text will only be translated if you press Space, Enter, or Space with dots 4-5. I hope that makes sense.
