Thank you again for your very helpful reply. I now know at least that I need to go and get some more headphones! If for any reason this does not solve the problem, I will let the group know so that they would all know the outcome.

I had this happen to me a few times whenever my Apple Earpods were on their last legs so to speak and there was some sort of short probably in the remote. I was on a flight once back from the Philippines and exactly what you described happened with respect to my audio book would start playing without me touching anything (or it would stop) etc. I got a new set of Earpods and all was fine. To give you some background, I recently upgraded to iOS9.2.1 and noticed a problem after this. Howver, at about the same time I also had problems inserting an iStick, which I succeeded in doing eventually. We also have some strange interference with our TV which we think is posssibly an old pair of speakers which need replacing. There's also some electronic gadgetry a short distance from our sitting-room window which does not belong to us but we sometimes wonder if this has caused problems. My problem pnly occurs when using headphones, which I do most of the time as Mike is writing nearby at the same time. Often Siri just chimes in, being absolutely convinced that I really do want his help! (In desperation I even turned him off, reset all connections and then rebooted, being sure to restrict Siri so that I had to tap the Home button to ask for his attention. He now does not respond to "Hey Siri" so I'm happy I've done this correctly. However, in the sittingroom with Apple headphones the problem continues. My music also starts playing without me wanting it. To add to the complications, we have a set of speakers for our TV in the sittingroom that are ageing and are a little faulty and there's also some electrical contraption not too far from the window which sometimes appears to interfere with our equipment. I am thinking that I possibly could have damaged the sockets, or maybe the problem has been caused by my volume being too loud. I have adjusted this, since some were having problems with the volume settings after an iOS update a little while back and I realise this could create a problem. Finally, there's also a setting or two I recently altered, so I'll now try to set those once again as before. One was the 3D Touch setting which I recently changed to its lowest, rather than the set level in the middle. I really don't know how to solve this one. I could go to the Apple Store once I have less of a cold and can fit it in, but I'm not sure whether they can really track this one down. Does anyone have recommendations as to what I should do now, please? Apologies for this ramble and the amount of information I felt was needed. Thanks to those who have read all the way through! I do appreciate this and now hope for some useful replies!
