I'll chime in and agree with Sieghard. I use my Apple earpods all the time and 
though they are a quality product, they don't last forever. I've gotten the 
same errant behavior you described when I had earpods at the end of their life 
and a new pair resolved the issue. I assume your phone is still under warranty 
but if not and you have Apple Care, be sure to return the earpods for a free 
replacement.
