Hi, People unlock their phones so that they can be used on other GSM carriers. In the US, these carriers are AT&T and T-Mobile. Or, for example, if you travel overseas with an unlocked phone to a foreign country such as the United Kingdom, you can swap the AT&T SIM card for a Vodafone SIM card or something else so that you don't incur expensive roaming rates while traveling. Unlocking your iPhone does not void your AppleCare warranty. To install apps not available in the iTunes store, you must jail break your device.
