This is not split screen. Split screen is something that was introduced I think 
when they introduced the iPad Pro last fall. That is where you have to apps on 
the screen at once. Split screen. What you guys are talking about with the two 
panes has been around since the iPad first came on the scene, and it is just 
how the iPad interface is.
