Hello Marissa, You might want to go to an Apple Store if you have one nearby since you should definitely not loose your WiFi connection when the phone goes in sleep mode. I never had that issue with either my iPhone 4 or 4S. I assume it could be the router's fault, but it could also be a faulty WiFi radio in which case they probably replace your phone.
