Great discussion, I've just gone in and made sure I have copies of
all my apps on my Mac, so will see what happens when the 7 Plus
arrives on Friday and if necessary update the book accordingly.

Hi Alan,
Let us know what happens. I'm pretty sure iTunes restores from
on-board apps if they're on your computer because last year, when I
got a new iPhone, I got tons of errors saying certain apps couldn't
be restored. It turned out that I had a bunch of apps that had
entries in my iTunes library, but the apps they linked to were
missing. I don't know how that happened, but clearly, iTunes was
trying to restore those apps from its library on my Mac and gave
error messages when it couldn't find them. Using iTunes to download
the missing apps got rid of the error messages, and the apps were
copied to my phone.
I have heard that if you restore in this way, some apps take up more
space on your device than they would if you downloaded them because
you end up with the complete app, rather than the thinned version.
Still, it's a faster way to get your apps, and it's nice to be able
to restore from a backup without needing a good Wi-Fi connection.
Best,
Anna

Thanks, Anna. I've had my iTunes Store preferences set as you
suggest below for quite some time. I guess the acid test on what
apps I get will be answered when I get a new iPhone and restore it
from my iTunes encrypted backup.

Hi,
The way I think it works is that if you set iTunes to download all
your apps, they will be copied from iTunes when you restore from a
backup. If you don't, they are downloaded from Apple's servers. You
set this up by going into Preferences with Control-Comma in Windows
or Command-Comma on a Mac, choosing Store, and checking the box to
download apps.
Best,
Anna

I'm still somewhat confused about what apps are restored to a device
following an encrypted backup restore. I know this changed with iOS
9 and I just read in Jonathan Mosen's iOS 10 Without the Eye new
book that apps aren't restored from an iTunes encrypted backup.
So let's say I decide at some point to buy a new iPhone 7. I'll
backup my iPhone 6 to an encrypted iTunes backup from which I'll
restore to my new iPhone 7. What version of the apps will be
restored to my new iPhone if I were running other than the latest
version on my iPhone 6? I've made sure I have backed up copies of
these versions to my computer using iTunes. It sounds from
Jonathan's book as if only the latest version of my apps will be
restored from Apple's servers. Is that right? What about apps that I
happened to be running on my iPhone 6 that are no longer available
in the Apps Store? Will I have to go through some extra hoops
placing backup copies of these older versions in my Automatically
Add to iTunes folder in order to get them on my new iPhone?
Thanks for any help clarifying what apps are restored following an
iOS 9 and later iTunes restore.
