Hi Chip, This is not so, Apple's servers know if the number belongs to an iPhone. In fact, the "iPhone" label is not even available in my contacts using Outlook.com, as far as I can tell it is only available if your contacts are in iCloud. All my mobile numbers are designated as "Mobile" and sending iMessages works just fine.
