I am curious why you say background noise cancellation should be off? As the
name suggests this is there so that background noise is reduced and it is
easier for the caller on the other side to hear you, I have this On which is
the default and never found it to be an issue.
Also, FYI, the camera is not what determines whether a call goes to
speakerphone. iPhones always had a so-called "proximity sensor" embedded near
the speaker at the top of the phone. This sensor is what determines whether to
switch to speaker if your face is not within a certain proximity and this also
is what locks the screen when you hold your phone up to your face so you don't
accidently press things on the screen with your cheek.

Sieghard

Hi!

I'll try to help with some things I know and uess from your explanations.

When phone is not in a call you should hear all notification sounds from the
bottom side speaker with no exceptions. Some notification sounds could be heard
through the earpeace but this only happens during the active call.

When in the active call you have two situations. If you hold the phone
vertically against your ear you will hear the conversation through earpiece but
if you movethe phone away from your ear the speakerphone will automatically
activate. You can prevent this by covering the front cammera with one finger,
it seems like speakerphone activates when front cammera detects light.

I suspect the speakerphone is active when people say they can't hear you well,
it happens sometimes.

The other thing you should check is Background Noise Cancelation you can find
in Settings, General, Accessibility under the Hearing heading and it should be
off.

And finally, you can easily upgrade to iOS 10 where you can disable automatic
speakerphone feature.

Thanks to y'all, I am making progress with my IPhone SE.

I am usually able to answer, make, and even hang up from phone calls...most of
the time.

The SE is running the IOS that came with it, either 9.2 or .3.

I have noticed the conversation seems to come out of a couple of different
places seemingly depending on its mood. It has an Otterbox defender case and
when I think it is doing normally, the sound comes out of the area toward the
top middle of the screen which has a rectangularish cut out of the case....then
sometimes, the sounds seems to be more easily heard by listening toward the
middle of the screen...and then nothing will do except the conversation comes
out of the little speaker hole on the bottom of the case next to where you plug
in the phone to recharge. Also, sometimes the person I am talking to says they
can barely hear me and nothing will help that unless I hold the phone
horizontally in front of my mouth so I can speak directly into the bottom of
the phone. Why is the sound changing places? Is this a fault with the phone
itself or am I doing something wrong? We have Verizon and the reception is
very good.

I also have a problem with the phone seeming to go automatically to speaker
phone. Sometimes I think it could be because I have moved my hand, but I just
don't know. Is that something I have to get used to?...I don't want everyone
to enjoy my personal conversations.

Any insight, explanations, suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks,

Nancy & her SE
