Richard, I always have had the ringers and alert button off. I now have sounds in my rotor which seems to hold 100 percent, but the volume buttons still move my ringer. Strange.
I do not know about the iPhone 7, but the buttons should not affect the alert sounds if that setting is off. This is what the description says after the sound setting is set to off: "The volume of the ringer and alerts will not be affected by the volume buttons."
