I have no pets so I named my Neato Willard and keep thinking I will tape an MP3
player onto the top with dog sounds. He is now a part of my family. and my
friends love it. LOL!

Subject: Re: Roomba 980 is the iRobot app accessible?

Hi,

Yes, I have had both Roombas and now a Neato Connected. The Roombas were
pre the most recent incarnation, thus, not running with an app. So, I can't
speak to that side of things. I always loved my Roombas, but the Neato is,
really, a new generation and incredibly effective and efficient! When I first
downloaded the app, it was accessible up to about 90 percent, only the battery
status was not viewable. Unfortunately, the last two versions allow for only
the most simple of commands, though, the battery status is now viewable. This
means that they can do it, obviously, they just need to commit to
accessibility. I tried to write them a report re this, but found, ironically,
that my iPhone 6, running the latest version of IOS, would not write in the
edit field on their support page! This is an IOS problem and not a Neato one. I
suppose we just have to learn to accept the accessibility is something that we
need to keep reminding the various developers about. However, and I imagine
that this applies to Roomba too! The Neato connected is usable, at its most
basic level, just by pressing one or other of the two buttons. It can be used,
without the app and it will do its job, you just have less control over modes
etc. Luckily, I have the original app on my iPhone 4s, so can do everything,
including seeing the battery status on my 6. Just as an aside, I have found,
since IOS 10, I have been using my 4s more and more, which is running 9x. more
than anything, I wish we could, easily, revert to previous versions of apps
when we discover new accessibility issues. I don't have the use of a computer,
using my iPhone, independently, so iTunes backups are not a possibility for me
and I don't really like the Cloud....

In short, speaking for the Neato, not having the latest Roomba, we can,
certainly, use it, but for full functionality, the app needs to be rewritten
with accessibility in mind. However, I would like to say that the Neato is the
easiest of all the Robot Vacuums, that I have seen or read about, to maintain,
empty and find. It has an excellent navigation system, better than my own! and,
almost, seems to have its own character!! I love the way it takes a running
jump when it encounters a particularly difficult threash-hold, going into my
porch. And when it gets itself into a tight place, it is wonderful to see it
lift its bottom and try to extract itself, almost virtically!

I would encourage all owners of these divices to contact, IOS being capable,
the developers to tell them that you are a VIP owner and need them to be aware
of VO when putting out app updates.

Happy hoovering! Sandy.

The neato currently has some app accessibility issues with VoiceOver, but I’m
still using mine successfully, although not as efficiently as I could with
better accessibility.

I direct message NeatoRobotics via Twitter on Wednesday asking them to make
their iPhone app fully VoiceOver enabled for blind users. I received a response
direct message from them several hours later thanking me for bringing this to
their attention, and that they had forwarded the request on to engineering. Of
course, there’s no guarantee that anything will be done. I’ve made the same
suggestion through their customer support twice previously without evidence of
change in their 2 recent app upgrades. But, as Mark Taylor pointed out to me,
companies seem to have different and possibly more impactful representatives on
their social media streams. I encourage others interested in this to either
direct message NeatoRobotics, or another avenue of their choice. It’s clearly
in their interest to address these changes.

  Thanks, Keith

  Hi Don,

Make sure you also check the Neato Connected robotic vacuum, it’s a bit
cheaper and gets much better reviews across the board. It’s been discussed here
quite a bit. I believe the app is accessible with some issues, but it sounds
from what Shaf said that this is also the case for the Roomba.

  Regards,

  Sieghard

Well the subject says it all.

A friend is considering getting one and I wanted to be sure the vacuum and
the app were a good combination.

  Thanks in advance.

  Don
