I had trouble accessing my mail when I first got my phone. I called Verizon 
continually and only after one of my last phone calls about the issue did I get 
a text message back saying oh I think we know the answer to your question or 
your dilemma and it is that you can only access visual voicemail  if cellular 
data is on. That certainly was the trick. I rarely turn cellular data on so I 
never get notifications or hear sounds to indicate I've got a voicemail message 
coming in they will only show when cellular data is turned on.
