I have used an OtterBox defender for all of my iPhones. I've never had scratches, Wakeling, or anything else with my iPhones. My iPhone 7 is also in the OtterBox defender case. I also have found it protects extremely well. My daughters phone was tossed over a balcony by her daughter. There were no scratches on the phone, though the case had a small crack in it. After a two-story drop, onto the cement, that's not so bad. :-)
