Hi Alan,

Well said, Apple has a totally different business model as it relies on its
hardware and services to make money. Google makes its money from advertising,
but of course now that Alphabet Inc. which owns Google and a multitude of other
companies has been set up, it is even more complicated. The fact is that
Android is a platform which manufacturers can use and customize and impose
their own UI elements on, there are hundreds and hundreds of manufacturers who
make Android devices and there is one company which makes Apple devices with
iOS. I always hear how users are running from Apple to Android because of all
that fantastic flexibility and freedom Android offers, yet while apple
experienced less growth about a year ago, the iPhone 7/7 Plus again were hugely
successful and just as people leave iOS to try Android, the opposite is also
true. I really think we should stop making every argument for or against one or
the other a competition as to what is better. The fct is that both platforms
are good, both are very mature by now, you can get beautiful devices from Apple
and you can get beautiful Android phones. Everybody decides what they want and
you are totally correct that Apple should make as much money as they can which
of course is what they do. They are a publically traded company and they have
an obligation towards their shareholders to make money. Pablo left the iPhone
behind a couple or 3 years ago because he thought Android was so much better.
When he came back to the list having just bought an iPhone 7 I think he said
himself how Android had all this flexibility but that it also had its issues. I
personally can’t justify owning two high-end smartphones and maintaining two
cell phone plans and while Apple sometimes totally screws up, I do for the most
part like their devices and ecosystem and so far have not felt the need to try
Android.
At the same time I am perfectly happy with my Windows computers and what
Microsoft has been doing with Windows 10, I like Jaws and know it inside out
and therefore don’t feel any urge to try Apple computers.

Regards,
Sieghard

Pablo,

I'm not sure why you think it's wrong for a for-profit company like Apple to
want to make money on their products. I guarantee you that any company not
operating in this fashion won't be long of this world. And you speak of Android
as if it's one company instead of the multitude of companies that make devices
that run under Android. If you don't like Apple's closed file system which
seems to be working pretty well for them based on their sales and current stock
price, you should use an Android device and I hope it meets all your needs.
That's the way supply and demand is supposed to work in our economic system.

Pixel doesn’t have a sd card slot, but it is not the only android device.
Samsung and many other big cellphone brands creates phones with sd cards.
Really the problem with apple is that they want to make money with everything,
and they want to handle what you place in your iPhone memory. With the story
abour copy rights they have done very difficult for users manage music between
iPhones, or also between iPhone and other devices. Yes, we can use iTunes to
transfer music to our iPhones, but use this app is really difficult for
standard users. More over in android devices you can store there documents of
all types, you can create folders and subfolders in the same way how we do in
our computers. In iPhones the story is different. It is one of the reasons why
I bought an android device. Android and IOs have different politics and
different cultures. Apple’s culture is money, money and more money. Android’s
culture is share, share and share again. Apple wants to control so much what we
do in our devices. Android gives freedom to do what ever you want, and more
important, in a very easy way.

Hi Victor,

I am not sure if Apple could keep their walled garden concept and offer SD card
expansion slots. If you allow people to introduce media on an SD card then the
OS must have access to the folders or maybe it would be more accurate to say
that Apple would have to give users access to what is on the SD card and that
would possibly defeat the purpose of the closed nature of the platform. Any SD
card, even the newest and fastest, would also introduce a lot of latency in how
fast things get loaded and I think this all goes against what Apple wants to
achieve. I think actually that even some high-end Android phones are moving
away from that, but I might be wrong, just something I heard. Does the Google
Pixel for example have an SD card slot? Lastly, having such an expansion slot
on an iPad is one thing because there is probably plenty of space, but having
it on an iPhone is most likely not very practical as there hardly is any space
left as is and of course making a highly waterproof or water resistant device
would probably be much more difficult if the device had an SD card slot.
Personally I have no problem with Apple offering internal memory, I totally
agree that nowadays 16 Gb doesn’t get you far, but I wonder how many people
still buy 16 Gb devices if they can get a 64 Gb device (4 times the space) for
$100 more.

Sieghard

I don’t agree. Granted, the 300 dollar price tag is nice, but not with the
memory it’s offering.

I think the 32 and 16 models of any device is outdated, unless it’s got an
expansion slot for an SD card.

Frankly, I’m completely surprised that Apple hasn’t embraced this concept,
since it would enable them to lower the amount of ROM memory on the device, and
allow people to expand according to their budget. Alas, it would seem that
Apple is destined not to ever get the message.

Hi Mary,
I would think if you could get a new iPad for $329 that would be a big deal.

These are not big deal upgrades. If they actually introduce a substantial a new
iPad Pro, I would suppose they would do so with a bit more fanfare. But these
upgrades are no big deal.

Apple Inc.<https://www.bloomberg.com/quote/AAPL:US> introduced a revamped
version of its most popular-sized iPad at the cheapest price yet, and a shiny
red iPhone 7, whose sales will help to combat AIDS.

Apple unveiled a new 9.7-inch iPad with a brighter Retina display starting at
$329, and a special edition red-aluminum finish iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus,
part of the company’s decade-long partnership with (RED), which contributes to
the Global Fund to fight HIV and AIDS.

“Since we began working with (RED) 10 years ago, our customers have made a
significant impact in fighting the spread of AIDS through the purchase of our
products, from the original iPod nano (PRODUCT)RED Special Edition all the way
to today’s lineup of Beats products and accessories for iPhone, iPad and Apple
Watch,” Apple Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook said in a
statement<wlmailhtml://news/terminal/ON6020MEQTXJ> Tuesday.

Apple is the world’s largest corporate donor to the Global Fund, contributing
more than $130 million, the company said.

Apple is expected to reveal a significant upgrade to the iPhone later this year.
Cupertino, California-based Apple last year unveiled a new iPhone which
reignited sales growth in the Christmas quarter after a year of declines. Those
falling sales came even as Apple introduced a cheaper handset in March in an
effort to spur growth in emerging markets. The only sales growth in the 2016
fiscal year came from the services business, which includes Apple Music and the
App Store, and the other products category.

Apple shares rose less than one percent to $142.55 at 10:24 a.m. in New York.
Earlier they hit a new intraday high of $142.80.

The new iPad starts at $329 for 32GB with Wi-Fi and $459 for 32GB Wi-Fi plus
cellular. It will be available to order starting March 24 in the U.S. and more
than 20 other countries and regions. The iPhone (RED) models will be available
in 128GB and 256GB models starting at $749 from March 24. Apple also announced
new storage capacity for the iPhone SE. That 4-inch display model will now be
available in 32GB and 128GB models, doubling the current capacity and replacing
the previous models.

Other product launches Tuesday include a new app called
Clips<http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2017/03/21Apple-Introduces-Clips-The-Fun-New-Way-to-Create-Expressive-Videos-on-iOS.html>,
that helps people combine video clips, photos and music that can be shared
through social media and messages. Apple also said its Swift Playgrounds iPad
app, which helps students learn to code, is available in five additional
languages: Japanese, French, German, Spanish and simplified Chinese.
