If your phone is unlocked and you switch to a different carrier you have to get a SIM card from them and sign up for whatever plan they may offer. You can port your number to the new SIM. I have had my cell number for 20 years now and whenever I switch providers I just port it to the new provider because of course everybody has my number and I don't want to change it. Here in Canada you can request to have your phone unlocked once you are 3 months into your contract and as long as you pay your bill on time. This is important if you travel where you may go to europe or asia where you want to get a local SIM, of course if you switched to a cheaper provider 3 months into your 2 year contract your original carrier would come after you. I don't even know why carriers still bother with locked phones, it's not like you can buy a cheaper phone on contract and then switch to a cheaper provider because as I said the original carrier can then simply charge you the penelty equal to whatever is left to pay on the phone.
