That is correct chip. The list on the main part of the screen starts with the very first item. But,, the standard behavior of VO is whatever you touch is selected. So, until you touch on the main screen, the VO cursor is still in the status bar and whatever you touched there has focus or is selected, means the same thing in this case. There is no way to have something selected without the VO cursor being on it.

You don't need to fool with a pinch gesture since iOS has had a text selection mode that you can have in your router. Put that in your rotor, turn to it, then you can choose by flicking up or down to select word, line, page. So you focus on the beginning of the text you wish to select, moved a text selection in the rotor, then flick right and you will be selecting text by the unit you picked. The text that you're selecting will be announced. Once you're done, move the router to edit moved a copy, and you're good. Much easier than the pinch gesture, which never worked well for me.
