I had done that several times. When all this happened, I was also in the middle of getting the latest version of iTunes. I finished that, and did the power button six times again, and finally, after a couple of minutes of high intensity tention on my part, the phone was recognized, and I was able to proceed with the restore. After a long while, it seemed to take forever, lots more high drama, my phone appears to be successfully updated, restored, and back to it's original state, with the possible acception of updating software.

You might try tapping the power button six times very qlkly to reboot your phone. It sounds like you may be stuck in recovery mode. I hope you had a recent backup that you are restoring from.
