I believe you wrong about not being able to use Face ID ... it doesn't require eye contact ... it doesn't look at where your eyes are looking, it makes a 3d map of your facial structure (not its visual appearance).

And my guess is that there are other totally blind people, not to mention those with prosthetic eyes, who also can't do it. I think I read that if you have VoiceOver enabled, that look at the phone feature is automatically disabled. I might be wrong. God knows memory isn't what it used to be. But if that is true, one assumes that Apple figures most voiceover users can't look at the phone. We shall see, as you say.
