Is this on your iPad? On my 6S I get delete if I flick up from a message. Also, on my iPhone there is no change in behaviour when closing tabs, it always worked for me so that once I switched the rotor to delete I could simply double tap on any open tab and it would close, I did not have to reset it to delete for each tab and I just tested this and it still works the same. I sometimes get newsletters, one for example is from Memory Express, a computer store. It comes every Sunday evening and has 7 deals one for each day of the upcoming week. Each day is a link so I tap on it, it opens in Safari and I can check what it is and if it's of interest. When I'm done I have 7 open tabs and for that the 3D press on the "Pages" button is awesome, it pops up instantly with two options, "New tab" or "Close all tabs", I tap on that and all of these tabs I just opened to check out the daily sale items are gone at once.

If the default is activated, then it should go there in all cases in all apps etc. Besides, I do not want to delete all of my tabs. So I would appreciate it if nothing was consistent. There is another sort of nitpick with the mail, because now in the list of messages, if you flick up once, instead of getting to delete, you get to drag. I can't imagine too many of us are going to be using drag whole hell of a lot in this context. But some genius decided that more people would use that then would use delete. Or maybe that's why they decided to make deleting easier if confusing.
