Unless she mistyped it sounds like she is not even yet updated to iOS 10 or
maybe an earlier version of iOS 10.
I have no idea if somebody is still on iOS 9 if they can go straight to iOS
11.1 or if they would need to go to iOS 10.3.3 first which is the last iOS
10 update.

Are you sure you have a iPhone 5s? If you have a iPhone older than a 5s
model it will not update pass IOS 10.3.

Try restarting your phone. If it still prompts for that, maybe go ahead and
update, then check for updates again.

I have an old IPhone 6 that I use for playing games and such. I have
been trying to update it to 10.3, but keep getting an error. The
update is downloaded to the device already, but, when I try to
update, I get a cannot validate the update error. It says I am not
connected to the internet, but that is not the case. I have tried
this over both my home Wifi and my IPhone 7 hotspot. I keep getting
the error and have no idea how to move forward.
Should I remove the download from the device, and make it redownload
it again?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
