It primarily benefits the Earskinz company who make them for 10 or 20 cents and then sell them for $10.95 US. I just had a look at them on Amazon.com and one thing that stood out was this sentence from the story of the guy who started this:
Almost every person he surveyed echoed the same complaints—earbuds just aren't comfortable, they don't fit, and they don't sound good. I find this statement interesting because I myself and quite a few others I have seen express an opinion on the list say the exact opposite, the Earpods (and Airpods) fit really well, sound great and are comfortable to wear. Yes, there are some who say that is not the case, but I am pretty sure when Apple introduced the Earpods I remember how they said that they took 3-dimensional scans of a huge sample of ears and then designed the EArpods to fit the vast majority of people. Let’s also not forget that they cost $35 and I’m sure Apple has built in a healthy profit margin so I am not comparing them to other headsets (in-ear or others) which cost 3 or 4 times that much. It also says that the Earskinz help to block out external noise which is exactly what I and most other blind users don’t want and I think Apple probably designed the Earpods the way they are because of this, they could have just as well designed an in-ear headset which really goes into the ear to block out sound and in fact I think they do have one of these for $70 or $80. Furthermore it says that If you have Airpods you have to remove them to charge the Airpods which sounds like a big pain in the neck if everytime I wanted to put my Airpods away in their charging case I’d have to take these things off and then put them on again. Anyhow, the goal of Earskinz will never be reached, they say they want that every person who owns an iPhone to also own at least one set of Earskinz and since I would never waste even $5 on something like that I am happy to say I single-handedly will make it impossible for them to reach their goal. I am of course at the same time jealous of this John guy who came up with the idea, if I had thought of it I could be a millionaire now instead of him!
