Yes, I do have hints turned on. I don't remember now why I turned them on, but something was said about an iOS 6 feature that worked with hints turned on. It may have been this one. I've been rather busy at work and trying to cram as much of the new features into my head that I completely forgot that I turned hints on. It may well have been this preview feature. I turned it off again and it went away. I will report this as a bug because this is a mail setting and I assume a sighted person can see whichever number of lines is specified to help identify messages without having to open them so this should not be dependent on having hints turned on in Voiceover.
