I had an expanding battery on my iPhone 5, but this isn't restricted to
just iPhones. Didn't we just have a discussion on this list about how
some people think leaving your phone charging for long stretches of time
will lead to battery swelling?
I don't consider myself an Android fan, but I do like my S7, and I think
this would be a good choice for Don, but I'll share my thoughts with him
on that on one of the other lists where he posted this same question.

This is the first I have heard of expanding batteries. Do you have
your phone in a hot place, in the sun?
I'm sure there is at least one android fan on here who will chime in
about how great they are.
Take care,
Lois

Two things to add to Kelly's solid points:
1. There is no one to call when you have Android issues, you are at
the mercy of whatever store you bought it from and good luck there.
2. In my office, at least 6 years ago, our office switched from
Blackberries, to iPhones for the 30 plus empoyees who need a mobile
phone as part of their job. Many of these folks are less than
technically inclined. No one has had issues like you are describing on
any of their phones and everyone has had at least two iPhones in that
time period.
Have you taken any of these phones to Apple and what have they said
could be the cause?
In my household, we've gone through two iPhone 5s's that we had for
almost 4 years, three iPod touches and two iPad mini's; and none of
them had battery issues. They were replaced due to choosing to upgrade.
Well, except for the first iPad Mini whose WiFi antenna died which
Aple replaced at no charge. They replaced the device, not the
antenna, and it was 3 months beyond the Apple Care coverage.
Now, on to my nutral opinion of android, or perhaps not so nutral,
grin. Very little is easy to do on an android compared to an iPhone.
They have far fewer gestures, because you have to dive into menus to
do many things which takes more steps than using the rotor. I teach
both to people mostly over 55, and iPhones are significantly easier
for people to learn.
HTH,
Richard

Your problems are covered under Apple’s one year warrantee and Apple
Care, which list members strongly recommend. Did you bring your
hardware problems to Apple so they could be addressed? Remember
different Android companies have differently engineered phones. In
2016, some Samsung phones had exploding batteries. In 2017, Google
XLII phones had ghosting issues on their screens. Everyone wants to
claim they make a device as good as or better than Apple, but when
these companies scale up production, their phones have problems. Then
company executives refuse to answer questions, like with Google’s
phones.

I know "android" is supposed to be a naughty word, but I need some
honest feedback.
I have been an IPhone user for about the last 6 years. However every
year or two my phone dies. I have had two phones where the battery
actually expanded and pushed the glass off the front of the phone, and
now my battery is not holding a charge for more than an hour or two.
I used an android phone back in the day when they didn't come with
touch screens, and I haven't tried on with the touch screen yet.
What I have been reading is that android accessibility is not as
mature as that of IOS, and if that is the case I would stick with
IPhone, but I am tired of exploding phones :)
I am not a social media kind of guy, and would use the phone for
making and receiving phone calls sending and receiving texts
navigating using maps while walking of apps like nearby explorer.
Any feedback is welcome. I do realize this list will be pro ios by
its nature, but any alternate views would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Don
