Agreed, it just made sense to me at the time.  I think we all do that, chuck 
money at a problem and hope it goes away.

Respectfully, that really depends on how you define good advice. The
majority of consumers don't need to purchase equipment to replace that
provided by their ISP's & I'm sure you're part of that majority. Do
you not know the model of your device? It seems silly to me to blindly
throw money at a problem in the hope that it will go away.
