He’s selling “new to excellent condition” the I.D. Mate Summit with 16gb upgraded memory card Latest data base of products dated October 2017 Padded carry case Genuine power adapter Sample bar codes for use on products that don't currently have a bar code label. $140.
I asked him this same question and this is what I got back. “The I.D. Mate bar code reader has a much larger scanning device and is a lot more sensative to reading bar codes than a smart phone Ap. It also projects out a blue target for those who have limited vision to assist in getting a bar code scanned. From what I have heard from those who have both the I.D. mate and the ap; they tell me the I.D. mate works much better and is far more accurate. But then it is also a matter of choice for what works best for each individual.” This is why I mentioned that I’m completely blind as one of the features he pointed out has to do with folks who have lo vision which would be irrelevant to me. He’s legitimate as far as what he’s selling since he’s always posting accessibility stuff and computers without complaints from people. For less than $150 I’m mildly interested, but again, if something like SeeingAI more or less already does what the I.D. Mate does, then I’m probably going to pass. If it on the other hand is faster than an app or is more forgiving as far as trying to scan stuff without hassling with a package or can or whatever then maybe we’re talking. Mate bar code reader instead of iOS barcode app? First, which versions of the ID Mate are they selling and for how much? New they run $1299.00. The current model is the Galaxy. The prior one was the Quest I think and the Summit before that, or I could have those reversed. There are older models, but I personally wouldn’t spend the money. We have an ID Mate Quest at work. The ID Mate scanners have no screen, so they are great for those who are totally blind. They are a dedicated bar code scanner, so they are very fast and they handle curves on things like cans and bottles better than an iPhone. Envision America updates their database about twice a year, after the first year, I believe it is $50 to update the database. But, unless you have a large inventory you are trying to keep track of, the free Seeing AI app’s Product Channel does a great job! And, since it uses an online database, you don’t have to worry about updates. The key with Seeing AI is to start with the iPhone camera about a foot or more away from the item and slowly bring it closer. I happened to have just used it yesterday on two bottles of wine and a box of mineral water cans and I would say it may have been a few seconds slower than an ID Mate. But, only a few seconds. One of the wines came from Trader Joe’s so I was quite surprised that Seeing AI had it in its database. Of course, there are other bar code apps like Digit-eyes… HTH, Richard “The secret is not to make your music louder, but to make the world quieter.” - Mitch Albom from The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto, page 1 From: [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> <[email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> > On Behalf Of Cristóbal Sent: Sunday, May 13, 2018 2:00 PM To: [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> Subject: I.D. Mate bar code reader instead of iOS barcode app? Hello list, Was wondering if anyone has an I.D. Mate bar code reader and what their thoughts are as far as having a standalone device as opposed to using an app on their iPhone or some other bar code scanning app like SeeingAI? Someone is selling some I.D. Mate bar code readers on a buy/sell list I belong to and while I’m somewhat interested, I’m wondering if ultimately, the app more or less duplicates what the I.D. Mate bar code reader does? That or is the singular task that the I.D. Mate bar code reader is designed for is that much more superior at what it does that having a stand alone bar code scanning device may be worth having? Also, for the record, I am completely blind so any features that the I.D. Mate bar code reader may have to assist folks with low vision wouldn’t matter to me and not be some sort of plus for having the device. Would appreciate any input or observations.
