The Amazon Tap doesn't have to be tapped to listen. Just like the other Alexa enabled devices you can just use the key phrase and use it hands free. Sure this will put extra strain on the battery, but the alternatives are no battery at all. Here's a additional link to a review where this feature in particular gets highlighted. Maybe this link will make more of an impact then my previous link did: https://www.cnet.com/reviews/amazon-tap-review/

Amazon has a number of Echo devices. The tap is one which has a rechargeable

the name indicates, you have to Tap it in order for Alexa to listen. I can't
remember the name of the other person who said you can set it up to always
listen, but as he pointed out, it would probably run down the battery pretty
quickly which is why Amazon has not designed it that way to begin with.

The other Echo devices are the Dot, the Echo, the Echo Plus and the Echo Show
or whatever it's called now, it has a small screen so if you were to make a
video call for example to another echo show user you could see each other.

The Tap is set up the same way as far as the physical buttons for volume up

I don't know about the Echo Tap, but the Dot, Echo and Echo Plus all have
volume controls. On the Echo Dot you have 4 circular indentations on the
top, if you think of a clock they are in the 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock
positions. Furthermore, if you are in front of your Echo Do so that where
the cable is plugged in is facing away from you (at the 12 o'clock position)
then the indentation right by the cable is volume up, across from it at the
6 o'clock position is volume down.
On the Echo and Echo Plus you can turn the entire top of the device, it's
about the first half inch and it turns very easily. Clockwise is volume up
and counter clockwise is volume down.

You may have already tried this. Say "wake word. Volume 10" that will
give you maximum volume.

To hear what Alexa is saying, I have to hold the device about 2 inches from
my ear.

Yes, but for me having to walk to the device and having to tap it to listen
seems to take most of the convenience out of being able to just wake it up
with "Alexa" or "Echo" or whatever wake word you set. I recently changed the
wake word from Alexa to Echo at my Echo Dot which I keep at my office
because one of my employees is called Alex and pretty much every time I
activated the intercom on our phone system and called "Alex" the Echo would
try to interpret what I was saying next. It definitely seems to have
problems distinguishing when you say "Alex" instead of "Alexa".

Sieghard

You could also use the Amazon Tap.

Besides purchasing a second Echo to have downstairs, there are a couple
other options:
First, you could purchase a third party battery which makes it as mobile as
your WiFi coverage allows.
Second, you could use an existing or purchase a bluetooth speaker,
headphones, etc. and listen anywhere within bluetooth range of your Echo.
But you can't really interact with your Echo without using something like
the Echo remote control.

Jeff

Hey guys,

OK, so i got the amazon echo plus. This thing is absolutely wild, love
it! I've got the app running with voiceover. So now the big question,
would be great to get some feedback on what you guys use it for. I've
gotten music working, works awesome, and tried adding events on the
calendar and stuff. Just curious to see some of the things you guys do
with it?
I thought for some reason the echo plus had a batery. 1 of the things
i wanted to be able to do is use it downstairs when i'm working out.
I would guess i'll have to get another 1 if i wanna do that.
