Hi Yuma,

As I mentioned I do woodworking which means I do anything from carpentry like I
am currently building a little addition on the side of my house for storage to
making displays for my retail store to more fine woodworking projects like
furniture, fancy cutting boards etc.
I have two main measuring devices I use to measure my workpieces and set up my
machines like table saw, router, drill press etc.:

1. The Clickrule which is a mechanical device that consists of a main unit
available in metric or imperial, accuracy is to the sixteenth of an inch and to
the millimeter,, respectively. It is a bit hard to describe, maybe you know it
already so for now I will leave it at this.
2. The Cobolt talking tape measure from England which can do either imperial or
metric at the push of a button, accuracy to the millimeter for metric and
sicteenth of an inch for imperial.

For the most part the sixteenth of an inch accuracy is OK, as you know the
millimeter accuracy is about half way between that of a 1/16 to that of a 1/32
so better than 1/16 but not quite 1/32.
In most woodworking projects you can get away with being off by a sixteenth of
an inch, if you build drawers you don’t want it to be more than that, though,
and sometimes it’s nice to have that extra accuracy, for example, if I want to
drill a hole or use a router to route a resess that is of a certain depth etc.

One requirement I and any woodworker has and which is very important is
ruggedness. The Cobalt talking tape measure is pretty good, it costs I think
about 55 or 60 british pounds and I am on my second one; things drop or get
bumped in a woodworking shop so it needs to be able to take an occasional drop
etc.

Best regards,
Sieghard

Hi Sieghard,

Yes, it's the smart tape measure. We've so far increased the precision so worse
case offset is within 1 mm. We're currently looking for higher resolution
machines to CNC the internals, and adding some machine learning to fit
individual tolerances for each unit so that we can increase accuracy over time
to sub milllimeter precision. This will require sending data from the hardware
to the app to our server on specific states, such as when idle or putting the
app into background mode. The empirical to metric conversions are already there
to 1/16th of an inch. 1/32 is something we are setting as a goal for the sake
of being cool, but most of the initial testers have not expressed the necessity
to do so. Can you give me some scenarios where .78 mm is required?

A++

Is this a talking tape measure? Sorry, I didn’t have time yet to look at any of
the links, but I’m a woodworker and always on the lookout for cool devices
especially if they allow me to measure accurately down to the millimeter or
when it comes to the imperial system at least to the sixteenth of an inch, down
to 1/32 would be even better.

Sieghard

Hi everyone,

Yuma from oseyeris here. Before I head off to see 5 astrophysics phds from my
uni to discuss everything about space, stars galaxies and of course, Astreos, I
wanted to give y'all a heads-up on something else.

As we are a hardware/software for (currently for mac/IOS) crew that tackles all
sorts of things that tends to complicate our lives as blind individuals who
either have active lifestyles, go to uni, want to create or do things sighted
people do, we have been awarded the prestigious Dyson award for the national
competition in Australia for our Macaron, the universal access smart tape
measure.

i wish I could send everyone a unit so you can feel it in your hands, play with
the magnets that attach things together and make the process of measuring an
amazing one, play with the app, etc. And I wish you could compare it with some
previous prototypes we worked on just to see how cool it is now, but for the
moment I invite you to have a read at the process and the journey in getting
there. link is below:

Just wanted to share the excitement we have within our team for this, and I
would like to invite you to Like our Facebook page below to keep up with what
we have coming through, including an "efficiently accessible" Trello desktop
app, more 3D tutorial podcasts with a better format, a free music sampling and
mixing tool, and much more.

Keep your ears peeled for the next update of Astreos due within days.

Have a great day y'all
