Hi List,

Following my signature is a document I wrote a few years back explaining how to
send text messages to the major USA carriers using the email client on your
computer. I believe most of the information is still accurate but proceed with
some caution as some info might be out-of-date.

It is possible to send text messages using your email client on your computer.
The messages can be plain text messages also known as SMS which stands for
Short Message Service. SMS messages are usually limited to 160 characters when
sent using a mobile device but might be limited to 140 characters when sent via
a computer's email client. This also might depend on the recipient's service
provider but I have not fully researched the limitation.

Messages with pictures or without limitation on length can also be sent via a
computer's email client. These messages are called iMessages in the iOS world
or mms messages in general. MMS stands for Multimedia Message Service.
Wikipedia has a good article explaining MMS at this link:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multimedia_Messaging_Service

This page has a good discussion of MMS and SMS with a table that succinctly
compares them:

http://www.diffen.com/difference/MMS_vs_SMS

The format of the sent to address governs which type of message is sent and
varies for each provider. The format begins with the 10-digit mobile phone
number of the recipient followed by the @ sign for all providers. What follows
the @ sign varies depending on the message format and the provider. Those are
provided below for the four major US mobile service providers.

AT&T

SMS email address: [email protected]

MMS email address: [email protected]

Verizon

SMS email address: [email protected]

MMS email address: [email protected]

Sprint

SMS email address: [email protected]

MMS email address: [email protected]

T-Mobile

SMS email address: [email protected]

MMS email address: [email protected]

T-Mobile is the only provider of those listed above that uses the same address
for SMS and MMS messages. Apparently, its servers analyze the message and
format it accordingly on receipt.

Hi Nancy,

When you text someone from your PC you need to include the 10 digit cell phone
number without any dashes or spaces plus the domain of the carrier. the domain
of the carrier is different depending on the carrier. The domain is, to use
Verizon as an example is below,

[email protected]

Check out this link for better steps:

If the text message is sent from your PC the reply should come back to your PC.
Depending on the carrier returning the text it might be an attachment to the
return email you receive in your In-box.

Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

Hi All,

How do you text a message to a cell phone; and where does the reply go
when they respond?

I know some folks who have forgotten how to write emails.

Thanks!

Nancy
