Hi Carolyn and others, Autobrightness is under Settings, General, Accessibility, Display Accomodations.
I just did some experimenting and this is what I found. I turned off the Screen Curtain and while indoors, and the brightness was at 31 percent. I stepped outside to a sunny day and pretty quickly the brightness went to 72 percent. I turned on the screen Curtain, and within a very few minutes, maybe 2, the brightness was at 0. So, it does seem to work that way so if you need help from a sighted person, and autobrightness is on, turning off the screen curtain should make the screen adjust to the light available. Turning on auto brightness along with the screen curtain always turn the brightness down to zero. You can verify this by looking in the control center at screen brightness when both auto brightness on screen curtain are on it should read 0%.
