I mostly agree with this post, but I see that some gratuitous Samsung
bashing had to be introduced. I wouldn't assume that Samsungs foldable
phone will be awful, although as the first foldable phone to hit the
market, I'm sure it'll improve over time. I also wouldn't be too worried
about Samsung batteries exploding, but of course, it never gets old when
someone brings that up! I do think there will be some sticker shock for
this phone, but that's true with all of the flagship phones, including
Apple's. For me, I'm really curious to get my hands on this phone when
it comes out, but even though I'm ready for a new phone, I doubt it'll
be the first foldable phone. I'm not even sure if I'll stick with
Android or switch back to Apple for my next phone.

Let's just say everybody needs to decide if they need a smart fridge
or any other smart appliance for that matter. I agree that in many
cases when an appliance which previously people had for say 15 or 20
years or even longer becomes a technological gadget in addition to the
appliance then it may need to be replaced or upgraded if possible
sooner. TV's are a good example. Back in the 80's and even earlier
people would buy a TV and typically expect to have this thing for 15
or 20 years or until the tubes wore out. In the last 10 to 15 years
since TV technology start really changing this is less likely. First
there were LCD and Plasma and people who bought a Plasma TV say in
2007 probably regretted it 5 years later when it was clear that LCD
was the winner. Now LED and OLED is what it is and it's a thing
between HD (1080P) and 4K and now 8K and of course now we start to see
TV's which can roll up and TV's with built-in digital assistants etc.
I bought a Sony LCD TV in 2007, it is a 40 inch size and at the time
it was upper mid range and cost $1,600 Canadian. Now I can buy an
equivalent TV in terms of screen quality and size for $400 or $500 and
for $800 to $1,200 (I am talking Canadian dollars) I can buy a 50 inch
LED TV.
The point is that just because I can doesn't mean I will. My 12-year
old Sony LCD TV still works great, the picture quality according to my
wife is still good and where we have the TV I could probably fit a 50
inch TV if it is one with virtually no bezel around the outside, but
that's probably it, there just is no room for anything larger than
that. So, until there is a bit more stability again as the technology
matures I will wait just as I won't buy a new smartphone for probably
at least 3 years and maybe 4 now that we have just upgraded to the
iPhone 8. Let them figure out first where they are going with these
new CPU's and screens which apparently could support Touch Id anywhere
on the screen, Face Id, foldable displays and all that. Sounds like
Samsung will be first to market with a foldable phone this year, but
you better believe that it won't be that great and maybe it's going to
be another exploding battery party. One thing I like about Apple is
that if they introduce something it will for the most part work. Of
course maybe there are cases where they come out with something which
is a one-year wonder, but just look at Touch Id and Face Id, both
existed before, both were never that great in most other
implementations and when Apple put them in their phones they were
solid and reliable.
Many said smart fridges are a stupid idea and all that and they don't
need it and they get along just fine without smart appliances and all
that. I could say the same thing for smartphones and cell phones in
general. When I grew up back in Germany in the 70's we had one rotary
dial phone in the house. There was no call waiting, call display,
answering machine or voice mail or cordless option. When the phone
rang and somebody heard it they would go there and answer with our
last name and if nobody heard it then it would just ring and
eventually the other party would hang up and try later. What was wrong
with that?
It's human nature that we want more and better technology, whether
it's always good is up to everybody to decide. At CES they said Kohler
now had a smart toilet with built-in speakers, a seat which heats up
and built-in voice control so you can ask it to raise or lower the
lid, flush etc. Now, talk about a smart fridge being a stupid idea.
I have even read articles where they talked about toilets which
recognize the various family members and analyse whatever it is you
are depositing in them. Sounds great, eh? Imagine a woman is having a
pee and the toilet says "Thanks, Sally, have a good day and by the
way, congratulations, you are pregnant".
Take care,
Sieghard

Again, I think people are kind of missing the point to the article.
It’s not so much the smart features per say that are built into these
appliances, but rather the support and lifespan one can reasonably
expect from them.
I think smart fridges are dumb, but different strokes for different
folks. Some people may want to geek out on that sort of stuff. It’s
where you want to convince me to pay a super-premium for something
where those particular features may be outdated faster than you can
say spoiled milk. Not to mention the security risks and whatever else
is coming down the road.
Dropping a couple of hundred bucks on a thermostat or connected
security camera isn’t the same as a fridge, dishwasher or whatever
that may cost you what you’d pay for a used car in some instances.

Well, I would never presume to tell someone else what features they
can and can't find convenient. I'd also never assume that only the
features I appreciate are the only features anyone else can enjoy. I'd
never call someone lazy because they take advantage of a feature that
isn't important to me. I'm perfectly happy with choice and letting
people choose and pay for the features they want. I'd let the market
place decide what customers want and don't want and wouldn't leave it
up to one or two people who think they know what's best for everyone.
I don't have an InstantPot, but I don't call someone lazy because they
find it easier to use an app then the controls on a pressure cooker. I
personally don't have a big need to control my lights from an app, but
I don't criticize those who do. I no longer consider myself lazy
because I use a remote to control my TV and home theater system even
though I could walk up to my TV and receiver and control everything
from there. I do think it would be nice to control my thermostat from
an app or a smart speaker, as well as monitor the progress of my
clothes, and if people want to call me lazy for doing that then I
think that says more about them then it does about my laziness.

I totally agree with Mary and other people that don’t have these

It’s making you lazy when you aren’t doing like you did things
back in the day. It’s not going to hurt you to get off your rear
and do the stuff that need to be done. Everybody needs exercise.
Matt and I don’t have these smart appliances where the echo has
to be used in order for the appliances to perform. Both of us do
our daily tasks just fine.
