I think calling this method with home and power
button a restart is misleading, it’s a hard
reset, sort of what you used to get with Alt +
Control + Delete or, on older desktops you had the actual reset button.
Anyways, I think the home + power button thing
does not work on any of the phones with the
virtual home button, e.g. the iPhone 7 and 8
and of course also not on the phones with home button.
As far as doing the volume up, volume down and
power button it seems to work consistently for
me, but you definitely don’t have to hold the
power button for 30 seconds. I just asked my
wife to look at my iPhone 8 as I was doing this
and about 8 or 9 seconds after I pushed the
power button the screen went black, I let go
and a moment later the Apple logo appeared and
the phone booted back up to the lockscreen
where I could put in my passcode in about 15
seconds. Maybe with an iPhone 6 or 6S this
would take a bit longer, but I think you
actually prevent this from working correctly if
you keep holding the power button for 30
seconds or even 20 seconds. I guess to be safe
you can do 12 or maybe even 15, but I
wouldn’t go longer than that, as I said, the
entire shutdown and reboot sequence only took
about 25 seconds after I started pushing the
power button and I let go after 10 seconds.
