Personally, I would close the app until you need it, since it will continue to use your location and could potentially drain your battery. As others have noted, I usually contact the drivers after requesting the ride so they can find me quickly and easily. I contact them via text, but I will call them if they arrive without a response back, or if the app gives me a limited time to contact them before it leaves. This has happened with Lyft. Both Uber and Lyft may send an automated response after the first text letting you know the person is driving and may not respond. However, most of the drivers I have asked when in the ride, have reported they did get my message. Sometimes I will even get a reply back from them, but not often.
