Wow, what a thread filled with speculation, cries of outrage and "Good
riddance" messages.

I am surprised by how many people are dismayed that eventually iTunes will go
away and you may note that I said "will go away" not "might go away". For now
Apple said iTunes for Windows stays around while on the Mac it is replaced with
these 3 apps for music, podcasts and TV. My surprise is based on the fact that
I rarely ever read anybody posting anything good or positive about iTunes,
people would go through great length to try and avoid using it because many
considered it to be inaccessible or very poorly accessible with a screenreader.
At times that was in fact true, but for the most part Apple, Microsoft or Jaws
has always fixed whatever could be fixed to make it work better again. But as I
said, to me the writing is clearly on the wall and I doubt that in 2 years or
maybe less iTunes for Windows will still be around. I am equally sure that
there will be apps for Windows similar to those for the Mac to replace it, but
I won't even try and speculate, if they are true UWP apps I could definitely
see accessibility challenges ahead given the somewhat poor track record of UWP
apps regarding accessibility. For those who don't know what UWP apps are, UWP
stands for Universal Windows Platform and these are apps you get from the
Microsoft Store and nowhere else and they are different from traditional
desktop programs. There is, for example, an Audible app from the Microsoft
Store which allows you to play your audible books on a PC, you can choose to
stream the books or download them (no Audible Download Manager is required) and
all in all it's very much like using the Audible app on the iPhone except that
the Audible app for iOS is super accessible and the Windows app is not. There
are scripts from Doug Lee which help, but even using the touch cursor in Jaws
there are things like for example accessing the Settings which I have yet to
figure out how to do. I can get into Settings and read the different tabs or
categories, but activating them is a different story. When my wife clicked on
any of these categories or tabs I could then again navigate them, but it's
definitely far from being accessible.
As for iOS 13 and the fate of iTunes I think there is no point to speculate,
whenever WWDC happens they always announce stuff where they don't necessarily
give all the answers this early on, let's wait and see although by now it is
clear iTunes for Windows will stay around for now. As for Christopher's
reference to our disagreement, I still maintain my position that Apple will not
entirely want to alienate their Windows customers by completely dropping
support for the platform. I didn't listen to the keynote yet, but there was
talk that for the iPad Apple may make it much easier to connect external USB
devices such as thumb drives or external hard drives and to access their
content and speculation was whether such a feature will come to the iPhone. I
don't know if the new iPad OS offers easy and native access to content on
external devices, but if it does I think it again is just a matter of another
year or two before iOS will follow. Given dwindling sales numbers for the
iPhone Apple will be actually more concerned to be compatible with other
platforms including Windows and Android.

Best regards,
Sieghard

You can simply backup your phone in icloud like I've been doing now for 5 years.

Not only will I miss the backup feature, but I will also miss the ability to
create and sync your own ring tones.
Maybe they will make a way to do this through windows.

Chris.
