The SE was also released in late March or early April of 2016 which was 6 months after the iPhone 6S came out so while it maybe a rumour, I could certainly see Apple doing this again just to generate some extra revenue in a world of declining iPhone sales. What this would mean is that they release a 4.7 inch phone (same screen size as the iPhone 8) but with the A13 processor and a much simpler camera (more like that of the single lens XR camera) and with the latest LCD screen technology which would make the actual phone physically smaller than the iPhone 8. It would then continue in the fall when the 2020 iPhones are released and most likely replace the iPhone 8 as the low-cost phone.
