Rumors are worth the paper they’re printed on, if they’re even printed these days. There are so many false ones, that you may as well disregard them all until something actually gets released. The most recent rumor about a smaller iPhone was published before apples event. And now that they have the iPhone 8 for rather cheap, I don’t see any way they could release another phone that would make any sense before next fall, when the regular iPhone release event happens. Where would it fit in their price scheme?
